The Fiona Quilt in Pivot

The Fiona Quilt in Pivot

The cover quilt is usually extra special with me because most of my patterns are designed while playing around with the fabric on the cover and that was definitely true for the Fiona Quilt Pattern. I love the bold colors that Rashida Coleman-Hale used in Pivot and I wanted to give them a chance to speak for themselves.

Whenever I see a fabric collection that has a wide range of value, I pay close attention to make sure the values are balanced in the quilt top. The Fiona Quilt does this easily because the fabrics are symmetrical horizontally and vertically.

I also really loved the movement within the fabrics of this collection so I didn't want to chop those up into tiny pieces. The squares in this quilt top still have plenty of room to show off the prints.

There are so many different ways that you can arrange the fabrics in this quilt, but for this particular one I started with darker prints in the middle, moved into lighter prints, then back to darker prints before using lighter prints in the corners. You could do the opposite or something totally different, but this a fun way to play with value because you really can't mess it up.

The binding fabric is Double Dots in Goldenrod Hour and the binding is Wildflower in black. These are two of my favorite prints from the collection and I love how they look together.

The quilting was done for me by Heidi of Piece and Joy Quilting Co. She suggested Light City of Fountains by Julie Hirt for the pantograph. I love how it turned out.
