The Hannah Quilt in Birthday

The Hannah Quilt in Birthday

As soon as I saw the new Birthday collection by Sarah Watts, I knew I needed to work with it. There are some super cute panels that go along with the collection, but I was more interested in the other prints. I LOVE basics (Add it up, Speckled, etc.) and this is like an entire collection of really fun basics.

A few weeks ago I purchased a jelly roll + some yardage so that I could make a new sample of the Hannah Quilt pattern. Because the blocks are strip pieced, they are super quick and I was able to get this quilt together in an afternoon.

It took me a little longer to get it basted and quilted, and then I had to wait for it to stop raining so I could photograph it, but it finally happened.

You might have noticed that I quilt almost all of my quilts with an "organic grid" - this is either done horizontally/vertically or diagonally, and I space the lines randomly. More often lately, I have been using the guide on my sewing machine to create more regular lines.

This time after I finished the grid, I decided to go back and add some diagonal lines to create asterisk shapes - it felt appropriately festive for these Birthday prints. With the grid already sewn onto the quilt, I was able to eyeball the diagonal lines without too much trouble.

The backing fabric is one of the 108" wide Speckled prints (the color is called Berry) and the binding is one of my favorites: Designer Essentials Solids in Mineral. It is a little lighter than navy and not a perfect match to the teal in the collection, but it blended in pretty well anyway.

If you would like to make your own version of the Hannah Quilt, you can pick up a copy in the shop. The Birthday fabric collection is in shops now.
