A Scrappy, Rainbow Ruby Quilt
You guys might have noticed that I enjoy making scrap quilts and I especially enjoy making rainbow scrap quilts. One of my favorite parts of the Ruby Quilt Pattern is that it lends itself so well to scraps so I knew that I wanted one of the samples to be scrappy, but I didn't realize how perfect the quilt was going to be for a rainbow of scraps.
The Ruby Quilt Pattern has lots of creative room for different options, it is great for making the most of your stash or scraps, and it is just a lot of fun.
My original plan was to cycle through a rainbow of colors in each of the diagonal stripes and you could definitely do that, but I realized that the lap size quilt has 7 diagonal stripes which was perfect for a rainbow.
I sorted through my scraps and realized that I had lots of fabrics in the blue/green family, so instead of sticking to the traditional ROYGBIV, I did more of a ROYG(blue/green)IV and combined the indigo/violet colors.
I know quilting can be intimidating, but this is not a pattern to fear. This pattern is designed to be easy enough for beginning quilters but also be flexible enough creatively for anyone.
You could do so many things with this pattern — I'm thinking black and white, low volume, all pink, patriotic, Christmas, etc. And of course all of the different ways that you could do a rainbow in this quilt.
For the backing fabric, I used a Heather Ross print from her Malibu collection that is a whole lot of orange (which I love) and turtles (which are adorable).
Since any color of binding would have worked with the quilt top, I decided to coordinate it with the backing fabric and used a Poppy Architextures from Carolyn Friedlander. The colors are both orange-ish but the coral matches an accent color used on the turtles and the combination just makes me happy.
This will not be the last time I make the Ruby Quilt Pattern (spoiler alert: I'm making another non-scrappy version right now). Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned quilter, this pattern is a fun one!
Did I miss the name of the low volume background! Would love to know what it is. Looks blue and white to me.
Hi, I love the quilt, and the low volume background. What fabric is that? Is it black and white? Grey and white? Thanks for the info
I wasn’t committed to the Ruby Quilt until I saw the rainbow version. Bought the pattern today. Your son is cute as can be, and I love seeing him in your photos. Your daughter is a cutie too. Your husband is not nearly so enthusiastic, lol. Bribery must be involved.
