A Carly Quilt for Carly's Baby

A Carly Quilt for Carly's Baby

You might have seen my stories on Instagram about how I picked fabrics for this baby quilt using the backing fabric as inspiration (the videos are saved to my story highlights!). I knew I wanted to make a quilt for my new nephew and I knew that this backing fabric would be perfect, but I wasn't sure which pattern to make.

Then it occurred to me: my sister CARLY was having the baby so I should make the CARLY Quilt! So that's just what I did.

In order to give the quilt more visual interest, I made the quilt like I was making a scrap quilt. I like this a little better for a baby quilt because it makes it much easier to balance the color and value in the smaller project.

The background fabric is one of my favorite low volume prints ever. I have used it several times (this was the only example I could find, but I have definitely used it in other projects). While this print comes in lots of different colors, this particular shade is just the perfect purpley gray that makes it so versatile.

The binding is another one of my favorite prints! If you can find it in a shop, let me know where because last time I found it, I bought all the shop had! It's an older Denyse Schmidt print and I just love it for the binding.

I hope you guys are proud of me because I was a little more daring than normal with the quilting. I used a neon yellow Sulky thread. It really stands out when you look at the quilt up close, but doesn't steal the show from a distance. I definitely need to be daring with my thread choice more often.

This Carly Quilt and the Economy Block quilt I made are now with my new baby nephew. He is just the sweetest!

I love the top stitching – the almost plaid squares. How to you achieve parallel lines? Do you use a ruler? I have tried but things always go wonky at the opposite end of the quilt!

I love the binding on your Carly quilt. How do you do that stitching?
